Probability and Expectation Inequalities
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper introduces a mathematical framework within which a wide variety of known and new inequalities can be viewed from a common perspective. Probability and expectation inequalities of the following types are considered: (a) P(ZEA) ~ P(Z'EA) for some class of sets A, (b) Ek(Z) ~ Ek(Z') for some class of functions k, and (c) Et(Z) ~ Ek(Z') for some class of pairs of functions t and k. It is shown, sometimes using explicit constructions of Z and Z', that, in several cases, (a) <=> (b) <=> (c); included here are cases of normal and elliptically contoured distributions. A case where (a) ~> (b) <~> (c) is studied and is expressed in terms of "n-monotone" functions for (some of) which integral representations are obtained. Also, necessary and sufficient conditions for (c) are given.

.1 Markov's Inequality
We will develop some inequalities which let us bound the probability of a random variable taking a value very far from its expectation. This is the most basic inequality we will use. This is useful if the only thing we know about a random variable is its expectation. It will also be useful to derive other inequalities later.

This paper is a Persian translation of R. T. Cox (1946) famous work concerning subjective probability. It establishes an axiomatic foundation for subjective probability, akin to Kolmogorov's work.
متن کاملPredicting Customer-Expectation-Based Warranty Cost for Smaller-the- Better and Larger-the-Better Performance Characteristics
The quality loss function assumes a fixed target and only accounts for immediate issues within manufacturing facilities whereas warranty loss occurs during customer use. Based on the two independent variables, product performance and consumers’ expectation, a methodology to predict the probability of customer complaint is presented in this paper. The formulation presented will serve as a basic ...
متن کاملSharp oracle bounds for monotone and convex regression through aggregation
We derive oracle inequalities for the problems of isotonic and convex regression using the combination of Q-aggregation procedure and sparsity pattern aggregation. This improves upon the previous results including the oracle inequalities for the constrained least squares estimator. One of the improvements is that our oracle inequalities are sharp, i.e., with leading constant 1. It allows us to ...
متن کاملA Bound on the Deviation Probability for Sums of Non-negative Random Variables
A simple bound is presented for the probability that the sum of nonnegative independent random variables is exceeded by its expectation by more than a positive number t. If the variables have the same expectation the bound is slightly weaker than the Bennett and Bernstein inequalities, otherwise it can be significantly stronger. The inequality extends to one-sidedly bounded martingale differenc...
